Dragon Oil Plc (DGO)

July 7th, 2008

Dragon Oil is one of those stocks that has engaged the attention of your discerning stock investor for many a year.

One sniff of the black gold in a part of the earth hitherto unheard of before the prospectors landed there is what oil exploration investing is all about, but the real question is……where on earth is it?

British Energy Plc (BGY)

January 31st, 2008

It’s all about as murky as the water in that curiously glowing pool you always see in photos inside nuclear reactors.

British Energy, which owns eight nuclear power stations in the UK, is in the van of a new wave of popularity for nuclear power.

But who owns what, who pays for what and who might own what if and when it’s been paid for is all a little less clear.

Scottish & Southern Plc (SSE)

We know what a big story energy is, and we know it’s a great big eco-fuelled bandwagon. All right, so we covered coal this week, but hey?

For us investors there’s got to be more to it than slavishly toeing the orthodox econo-political line. We’ve got to think laterally.

After all, one of the greatest political thinkers (not!) of the Noughties was in charge of policy on alternative energies. So how can you go wrong?

Great company, but to a customer who has lived up here in the Highlands with Hydro power for 50 + years, us locals are paying the cost of SSE’s consolidation of resources,

We see less green energy generated from our hydro system which now only appear to be turned on when the ROC (Renewable Obligation Certificates) plus the high BETTA market prices can be achieved! Yes it is all very profitable but some of us have to pay for it to support the wealthier regions of the UK!

Tullow Oil Plc (TLW)

Of all the places you’d think of that were famous for oil companies – here’s betting Ireland wouldn’t be among them.

It might be an Irish firm with a couple of African finds on its hands, but there’s nothing vapoury about Tullow Oil.

It has gushed up the FTSE100 and set investors aflame but it doesn’t look like capping off any time soon.

I bought 1000 shares in this company because I liked what I read about Aiden Heavey - a fine Irish lad made good. It seems I have made a sound investment. Seán, from County Mayo.
