Shanks Group Plc (SKS)

May 21st, 2008

For centuries, man has strived to find the secret of turning ordinary materials into gold. It used to be called Alchemy.

But one company has a new take on alchemy. Shanks has discovered the secret of turning crap into profit. Literally.

And, of course, if you are in that kind of business, the best thing about it is that there is never any shortage of raw materials.

A promising sector, but Shanks is just one of dozens in this business - why Shanks in particular ?

  2. Editor Steve Says:

We only cover one at a time - we did Biffa a while back and called it as a take-over target. Happy to look at more if you want to give us a suggestion. S

Intertek Group Plc (ITRK)

We all have fond memories of our favourite toys but the last couple of years have not been kind to companies in the playtime sector.

There has been one recall after another as some China-manufactured toys have been found to more toxic than Saddam Hussein’s compost heap.

Once again though, some firms have been tarred with a brush destined for others, and as you know, this can create value…

BP Plc (BP-)

March 6th, 2008

You know when you pull over and you have to part with most of the GDP of small country for a tank of petrol.

Then add the cost of a half-heated sausage roll and a roll of wine gums to the bill and give your bank manager a scare.

BP have had a pretty rough time of it too, but sooner or later all that gas cash is going to flow into the share price. We hope.

what a waste of space is this facility. Takes ages to download and then gives a pathetic message. Not for serious investors

  2. david Says:

you’re dead right. scrap it now

  3. Jon Lord Says:

I don’t think it’s supposed to be serious. Hance the Marty Feldman picture. NOt eh best episode for sure, but some of them are hysterical.

  4. Geoff Says:

It’s a while since I looked at this feature and now I remember why. It has to cover something we do not know for it to have value.

  5. Toby Says:

Why the vogue from so many websites for videos or podcasts where you can only absorb information at their, snail’s, pace. Is it a case of “the technology is there so we’re going to use it, whether it’s appropriate or not”? With reading you can scan it to decide whether to read it at all, read in depth the bits you want and skip paras of no interest - as you can with this!

  6. D LAING Says:

I thought it was quite good actually-until the comment about admin workers in scotland not being important.

Biffa (delisted)

Who said investing was a glamourous business, hmm?

Well, sometimes you’ve just got to roll up your sleeves and get down and dirty.

And they don’t come much dirtier than waste management giant Biffa. Where there’s muck there’s brass, after all.
